Over the years Nannying as a career has become more lucrative. The term Nanny dates back as far as the 1300's. Traditionally the Nanny would work in a large household answering to the lady of the house, back in times were women were not allowed to be independent it was a sought after career. The Nanny would often be given her own accommodation on the family property and would care for the children. The educated Nannies would teach the children until they could attend a more formal education.
Today, there are many forms of Nanny. Salaries range from $50k per year to $150k per year, depending of the qualifications of the Nanny and experience. Duties of the Nannies vary according to type of families they are working for. However college educated Nannies who have studied child development and attend conferences for their career are becoming more highly sought after.
Many men and women become Nannies now, either as a career or while they are studying for a career in the childcare field. Some are studying to become occupational therapists, children's lawyers, pediatricians, some wishing to be career Nannies, Teachers, Children's Therapists, family therapists.
The role of the Nanny has also changed over the years. Today the Nanny is responsible for:
- managing the schedule of the children.
- managing the nutrition of the children.
- homework/ education of the children.
- ensuring the children receive some form of exercise in the day.
- providing emotional and social support to the children/ teaching the children manners, etiquette and conflict resolution.
